March 2023 Newsletter

2023 Maple Syrup Season

Or Sugarin’ as the old timers often call it will be upon us soon. Saturday, March 4th a group of volunteers will tap all the trees, put the bags on bag holders, prep the buckets, sap tank and get the evaporator ready for the first “run” of sap up the Maple trees. There will likely be significant snowshoeing involved after our recent snowstorm.

Our Maple Syrup Experiences are nearly sold out and we look forward to welcoming folks out for a day in the Sugar Bush and hoping the weather cooperates.

Classes and Experiences for 2023

This year will be an exciting one for us as we should double or triple the number of classes and experiences offered at the Avon Hills Folk School. We have ten of our traditional classes on the calendar already, beginning with Fundamentals of Beekeeping this Saturday, March 4th at Milk and Honey Cider - only 4 spots left! Some of our classes are sold out and we are working on getting more on the calendar soon.

Our youth programming continues to grow in size and popularity. This will be our second year of offering TimberNook experiences at the folk school and we are VERY excited about that. We currently have 22 TimberNook experiences available. We also look forward to bringing kids to the folk school this year for a number of other experiences - stay tuned!

Big plans for the folk school campus in 2023

Through the generosity of several donors we will make some big improvements this year. A Timber Frame Pavilion will be built during two classes and erected on campus, our June class is sold out, several spots remaining for our July class.

Also happening this year are improvements to our parking situation and access to campus - so lots of dirt being moved! We also will be able to update the electrical in the shed and get the lower level finished. And finally we look forward to enclosing the Sugar Shack this spring- enhancing the ability to hold classes in that space as well as some much anticipated community gatherings.

Volunteers!

The result of all this activity? Lots of opportunities for volunteering at the Folk School this year. Please watch for announcements of these dates and opportunities coming up soon. Our community is growing and we’ll need every one of you to continue our growth and journey.
