Hawk Tail Whisk Brooms with Mixed Media Handles - August 24, 2025
August 24, 2025
8:00 am - 12:00 pm
Let’s get creative! Learn how to make the traditional hawk tail whisk broom pattern with your own personal touch. These small hand-held brooms have a symmetrical splay, representing the iconic broom shape most people envision. In addition to working with natural broomcorn, we will explore texture and material as we weave handles with treasured items from home. Bring any material that you may want to incorporate into your handle: precious fabric scraps, felt, fresh/pliable birch bark, braided grass, magazine scraps, leather strips, etc. Make sure that your material is at least 4 inches long (or more for a longer handle) and can cover a diameter of 1.5 inches. Bring enough extra material to experiment, practice, and share! Everyone will leave with a broom reflecting their own unique style.
Please note: Broom making does require a fair amount of upper body strength. If you have any concerns, please contact the instructor prior to class.
Tuition: $70
Materials: $20
This course is for students 16+

Rooted among the rich soil of the Midwest, Rebi creates work that hugs the line between craft and art, bringing beauty to everyday functional items through her business Rooted Apricity. Broom making has become the perfect balance of her desire to make, her love for plants, and her passion to live as close to the earth as possible. In 2013, she graduated from Carleton College with a B.A. in Studio Art, and her brooms have made appearances at art fairs across Minnesota and North Dakota. All of her brooms are handcrafted with traditional broom making techniques, weaving patterns, warmth, and love - providing a natural alternative to the synthetic brooms often found in stores. A huge supporter of the slow living movement, Rebi feels blessed by this opportunity to share her passion and inspire other creatives.
