June 8-12, 2026
9am-5pm each day
During this course, students will be cutting new timbers for the folk school's 136 year old barn restoration project. These timbers will be used during the spring of 2027 to replace missing or damaged timbers from the original barn, which will be raised on the folk school property (students will be invited to help raise the barn!).
This course will use square rule principles to layout joinery, and a combination of hand and power tools to cut joints. This course is a great fit for someone who:
Has previously taken a timber framing course and wants to build their skills.
Already has some woodworking/carpentry experience, and wants to add timber framing to their tool belt.
Is interested in learning how to safely and effectively utilize power tools to cut timber frame joints.
Wants to build and learn with an intentional crew, in a safe and welcoming environment.
Tools used during this class will include circular saws of various sizes, beam saw, cordless and corded drills, and a chain mortiser. Students will practice layout techniques, tool safety, and precise cutting of mortise-and-tenon joinery. The focus is on working accurately, safely, and with growing confidence.
By the end of the class, students will leave with an understanding of square rule layout principles in timber framing, safe and effective use of modern timber framing tools, a network of peers in the trade, and the confidence to continue timber framing.
